Description
The Corporate Education Offices, located at 127 and 129 Bath Street in Glasgow, were designed by H E Clifford and built between 1910 and 1911. This five-storey building, which includes a basement and attic, has been converted to hotel use in 1999. The exterior features polished ashlar stone with a V-channelled rusticated ground floor and basement.
The central section of the building is five bays wide and projects forward, showcasing a giant order of Roman Ionic semi-engaged columns and end pilasters that rise through the first and second floors, all set on a continuous plinth pierced with balusters. The entrance includes a round-arched Roman Doric porch with rosette necking on the columns, leading to a glazed double-leaf panelled door with a fanlight. This is flanked by four round-headed windows in cavetto recesses, which feature geometric glazing bars.
The windows on the first and second floors are adorned with architraves and T-pattern glazing, with cornices on the first floor and keyblocks on the second. A dentil cornice is present on the second floor. The attic features five central raised bays and outer pilasters, with architraved windows in the centre that have keystones supporting a panel, flanked by sculpted pilasters. The building has a slate roof and end stacks, although the right stack has been removed. A balustraded ashlar boundary wall with a basement entry completes the exterior.
Inside, the building includes a tiled vestibule decorated with a swag motif.
