Description
Holy Cross Primary School, located at 316 Calder Street in Glasgow, was designed by Andrew Balfour of Steele and Balfour and completed in 1914. This tall, symmetrical, three-storey building is constructed of red ashlar in the Edwardian Baroque style. The eastern front features giant pilasters flanking shallow outer pavilions, with closely spaced windows separated by masonry strips and an original distinctive glazing pattern. The building has a blocked cornice and piended slate roofs topped with red ridging tiles. The northern side faces Calder Street and includes an advanced center section with chimney stacks.
The playground is enclosed by low iron-railed walls, which are supported by corniced square piers, and the railings feature Art Nouveau detailing.
