Description
289 Allison Street in Glasgow is a finely-detailed four-storey tenement building designed by Alexander Thomson between 1875 and 1877, and likely completed by his partner, Robert Turnbull, in Thomson's style. The main facade faces Allison Street and features single window bays, while the return elevations are simpler in design. To the left of the center, there are receding wall-planes that may reflect Thomson's original design, although the overall treatment has been simplified. The building is constructed of polished ashlar with most of the carved details now stone-cleaned. At the ground level, wide pilasters frame the bays, and there is a deep entablature above. The distinctive aedicular openings are notable, with the top floor windows featuring pilastered jambs that support the deep main entablature, and anthemion motifs set in recessed panels between the windows. The glazing is distinctive, with tall lower sashes, and there are wall-head stacks topped with acroteria. The roofs are mainly slated, though some areas have been re-roofed with modern tiles. Additionally, number 34 Daisy Street has been re-glazed.
