Description
Holmlea Primary School, located at 352-362 Holmlea Road in Glasgow, was designed by Andrew Balfour and completed in 1908. This Edwardian baroque building is constructed from red Dumfriesshire ashlar with a stugged and polished finish, featuring a bull-faced base. It stands two storeys tall with a long, symmetrical south front that appears to have been built in stages. The façade includes a recessed three-bay centre that connects two identical outer ranges, each characterized by end pavilions that are slightly advanced and defined by giant angle pilasters. The main roof is set forward and piended over the pavilions. Some first-floor windows break through the eaves and have pedimented dormer heads.
The central door is set within a channelled doorcase, flanked by windows in blocked architraves. A generously windowed low range, possibly a hall, extends centrally at the rear. The flanks of the building are also symmetrical, each featuring a central door (with infants and other facilities at opposite ends) and a tall round-arched stair window. The original glazing remains intact, and the building is topped with a mutule cornice and wall-head stacks. The roofs are piended and finialed, covered with Westmoreland slates.
Additionally, there is a two-storey gabled janitor's lodge at the northeast, which is part of the original design. The playground is enclosed by "Glasgow-style" wrought-iron railings.
