Description
Holm Foundry, located at 147 Newlands Road in Glasgow, is a pair of large, nearly identical buildings with their entrances connected by a recessed narrow link. The west range was constructed in 1912 based on a design purchased from Albert Kahn's Trussed Concrete Steel Company in the USA. It features a steel frame with concrete and multi-paned glazed infill panels, along with horizontal courses adorned with classical mouldings. This range is four stories tall, with a set-back fifth story added by James Miller between 1928 and 1929.
The east range, built between 1949 and 1951, is externally identical to the west range but does not include the fifth story. Only the facade of this range is listed, as it forms a group with the west range and the amenity building.
The property also includes wrought-iron gates that feature Art Nouveau ornamentation. To the east, there is an asymmetrical amenity block constructed in 1937 by Wylie, Shanks and Wylie Architects. This block is white-rendered and designed with a streamlined appearance.
