Description
Built in 1871, Crawford Priory’s stable block is a large, symmetrically planned structure arranged around a rectangular courtyard. The stable block was likely designed by William Little and Rodolph Fielding, who were employed at Crawford Priory between 1870 and 1872. It is constructed from snecked and stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings.
The south elevation features a wide, projecting central bay with a segmentally arched pend, a horse head keystone, panelled spandrels, a tripartite window above, and a crowstepped gable with a blind oculus and small angle turrets. This central block is flanked by wings of seven bays, arranged as 2-1-3-1. The single bay sections are advanced and have hood-moulded windows and crowstepped gables, while a two-bay section is two-storey high and a three-bay section is single-storey. The wings return around the courtyard, mostly single-storey, with some containing lofts. The west courtyard elevation has a series of carriage arches, mostly segmental-headed. The east elevation features stables, doors, and windows to the courtyard, gabled wall-head dormers, and gableted and pinnacled axial roof vents. The north block has three two-storey central bays, two of which are gabled, with three blocked segmental-headed carriageways opening onto the courtyard. Bracketed roof gutters, gableted and crowstepped gables, corniced bow-ended axial stacks, and a slate roof complete the exterior. The interior remains mostly intact.
