Description
Tower Bridge, located in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline, was originally built in 1611 and later reconstructed in 1780. The bridge features a semicircular arch over a segmental pointed arch, with the lower arch reinforced on the north side by a pair of semicircular arches, likely added during repairs in 1788. It is constructed from coursed lightly stugged sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings. The arches have V-jointed ashlar voussoirs and ashlar soffits. The bridge has coped parapets, with a pair of short balustraded sections flanking the solid parapet above the arch on both sides. There are flanking buttresses on both sides of the arch. A carved stone panel above the lower arch on the south side displays the date '1611' and the initials 'A R'. The keystone below is inscribed with '1788', indicating the date of repairs. Another stone panel above the arch bears a shield and the inscription 'rebuilt 1780'. Initials, probably 'C D J', are carved on a panel adjoining the coping above. The inside of the north parapet is carved with the date '1915'.
