Description

The East Gateway in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline, is an early 20th century structure featuring railings designed by Thomas Hadden in 1950. It consists of a pair of double wrought-iron gates flanked by square-plan sandstone ashlar gatepiers. Between the gatepiers, there are wrought-iron railings set on a chamfered sandstone ashlar base. The design is free classical, characterized by rusticated gatepiers topped with broken pediment ends, and includes bases and band courses on the gatepiers. The gates and railings feature scrollwork panels and foliage, with thistle finials on both the gates and stanchions.

The boundary wall surrounding the park has various dates, primarily from the 18th century onwards, and is mainly constructed of coursed sandstone rubble along with low railed coursed sandstone and sandstone rubble walls. This wall encloses an area of 76 acres. A minor gateway was built in 1912 at the southern end of St Margaret Street, featuring flanking low coped sandstone walls topped with decorative wrought-iron railings that are similar in design to those at the main gateway on the Wynd. Both the railings and gates include wrought-iron scrollwork. Additionally, the railings along Monastery Street are of a similar design and date. There is also a cast-iron gate with decorative Art Nouveau metalwork located to the west of the remains of the Abbey Palace.
