Description
The World War II Memorial, located on the north side of Monastery Street in Dunfermline, was designed by James Shearer and built between 1951 and 1953. This rectangular cenotaph features a raised platform with parapet walls on the north and west sides, and two flights of steps leading down to the south. The design is austere and geometrical, constructed from coursed stugged rockfaced sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings, including squared coping.
The main focal point of the memorial is the raised parapet wall on the north side of the platform, which is decorated on the south side. It features a shield carved with the Scottish flag to the left of center, with the inscription 'PRO PATRIA' above it. Directly above the shield is a small platform that holds a lamp of eternal flame. To the left of the shield, there are two small copper panels bearing names, and to the right, a larger panel. Above and below this larger panel, the inscription reads 'THOSE OF THIS CITY WHO DIED IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945'.
The lower section of the parapet wall extends to the left and continues around the platform to the steps on the left side. These steps are flanked by stepped parapet walls. There is a second set of steps on the outer right of the platform, which extends at right angles to the left along the front of the platform and then turns again at right angles to connect with the first set of steps, accompanied by a projecting stepped parapet wall on the outer right.
