Description

The World War I Memorial on Monastery Street in Dunfermline was designed by Taylor and King of Manchester between 1923 and 1925. This rectangular-plan cenotaph features a simple, symmetrical geometric design made from sandstone ashlar. It consists of a coped wall oriented northeast to southwest, following the existing wall at the edge of a steep slope, with returns at both ends. The wall rises at the center along the main axis, flanking a slightly projecting pier that has a gabled apex and is carved with a prominent cross on both the inner and outer faces.

On the principal (west) side of the pier, there is a slightly projecting panel with ledges at the base that holds a lead plaque displaying the burgh coat of arms, the dates of the First World War in Roman numerals (MCM XIV - MCM XIX), and a dedication to "The men and women of the city and Royal Burgh of Dunfermline who died for their country in the great war." Additional lead plaques set back on the flanking walls list the names of those honored.

In front of the memorial is an altar-like structure on a stepped base, inscribed with "THEIR NAME LIVETH EVERMORE." Flanking steps extend forward on either side between the return walls, which are stepped down at this point. A terrace is formed at the top of the steps, situated between the altar-like construction and the main axis wall.
