Description

Old Kirk House is a large house dating from 1814-16, with alterations and an enlargement in 1836 and later modifications. It is situated at 1 Moodie Street, Dunfermline, and includes a detached former manse. The design is classical, with a slightly projecting, pedimented central bay on the south (principal) elevation, and flanking columns supporting the entablature above the main entrance. The principal elevation is finished with finely dressed sandstone ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings.

The original block has a base course and moulded eaves cornice on the front elevation, and architraved windows on the front and side elevations. The original block has V-jointed quoins. The house is two stories and an attic, with a basement. Extensions include piended dormers in the centre and flanking polygonal dormers. A conservatory was added to the west elevation in 1998.

The south elevation features a 4-panel timber front door, with a replacement fanlight above. Ground floor windows have been widened to become 2-light mullioned windows. Cast iron balconies are located to the outer first-floor windows. A basement window is on the outer left side.

The west elevation incorporates a conservatory, accessed through an existing opening. A blocked attic window is visible, and a cast-iron balcony is present on the first-floor window. The east elevation has windows to the ground and first floors of the original block, with a blocked attic window centrally positioned. The wing to the right has two ground floor windows, and one first-floor window.

The north elevation displays a first-floor window to the right of the original block, and a blank end wall of the wing projects to the left. The wing steps out with a catslide roof; a section of the wing has a boarded timber door and a narrow side window, with a window above. The right return of the wing features two ground floor windows (one small) and one first-floor window.

The glazing consists mainly of 4 and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, with a piended roof on the wing. Corniced gablehead stacks with round cans are located on either side of the original block.

Internally, most of the original features have been replaced, including the staircase, which has a timber balustrade likely dating from the later 19th century.

A pair of square gate piers, with polished V-jointed ashlar on the east (road) side and coursed stugged sandstone on the inner face, stand to the northeast of the house. They have a moulded cornice and pyramid coping. A pedestrian gateway is located to the south. Boarded timber gates have replaced the originals. A sandstone rubble boundary wall runs around the property, with rounded ashlar coping on the east side; it adjoins the remains of a boundary wall of Dunfermline Abbey to the north, including a lower gateway to the northeast. A Victorian letterbox is set into the wall north of the gateway. Low coped walls with cast-iron railings subdivide the grounds; a central cast-iron gate incorporates quatrefoil motifs. To the north stands an original stable block/barn constructed of sandstone rubble, which has been converted into a flat and garage.
