Description
North Bridge is a bridge with origins dating back to the 14th century. It was rebuilt in 1571, 1835, and 1912. The structure is made of squared coursed and rusticated limestone, featuring ashlar facing on the inside of the parapets and granite dressings. It has 13 semi-circular arches, each adorned with moulded granite keyblocks. Notably, the first and seventh arches from the north end on the west side lack keyblocks and show visible remains of earlier bridges. There are five cutwaters with refuges at the north end and two similar cutwaters at the south end, all located on the east side. The bridge has a plain parapet with moulded coping and square piers at both ends. A gateway in the center of the east side also features similar piers. On the west side, there is a reset copy of a tablet discovered in 1835 that reads, "In the yer of oure Lord 1570 thes arches wer borne downe by the waters externytit. In the yer of oure Lord 1571 they were builded agayn with lyme and stone. Thanks be to God." Additionally, another inscribed tablet on the west side commemorates the rebuilding and widening that took place from 1912 to 1914.
