Description
Havelock Cottages (South Block) is a mid-19th century building located on East Road. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a hipped slate roof. The structure stands two storeys tall, with the east end being lower than the west end. The façade includes four bays of horizontally sliding sash windows with glazing bars, as well as ten bays of casement windows. The doors are boarded, and the east end has attic dormers that are recessed into the slope of the roof. The street-facing elevation has two bays, with sash windows featuring marginal glazing bars on the first floor, a shallow canted bay with glazing bars on the ground floor, and a door with four moulded panels.
Inside, each cottage has a brick-floored living room that showcases a variety of 19th-century chimney pieces, some made of marble, along with cast iron ranges. There is a pantry that is illuminated by an unglazed but shuttered one-light window, and a newel stair that leads to two rooms on the first floor. Havelock Cottages is a prime example of planned mid-19th century workers' housing.
