Description
Muir’s House is a three-storey, five-bay house dating to 1636, with later alterations. It is rectangular in plan and has harled walls, with exposed stone used for window and door surrounds. Decorative dormerheads are present on the east side.
The principal east elevation features an entrance door in the second bay, with a National Trust for Scotland plaque and lamp positioned above it. To the left of the door is a horizontal window, and to the right, a standard window. A blocked door sits in the rightmost bay, also with exposed stone surrounds, and a small window is to the left of the door. A small first-floor window is at the first bay, and another window is to its right. A window, possibly a former door, is located at the third bay on the first floor, appearing half-blocked. Above the door on the far right is another window. A pedimented dormer is present on the left, featuring reeded carving within the pediment, projecting scrolls to the rakes, and a thistle finial. On the right, another pedimented dormer has projecting scrolls to the rakes, an inscribed tympanum reading 'PK ME 1636', mullet symbols, and a mullet within a round finial. A lean-to extends to the far right, featuring a ground floor window.
The south elevation is attached to The House at West Green. The west elevation shows a central ground floor window, with a window to the left. Above these are first-floor windows to the left and right. Catslide dormer windows are on the right and left sides. A lean-to extends to the far left, with a ground floor window.
The north elevation is a plain gable, with a lean-to extension at ground floor level, a central door, and flanking windows.
The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a replacement timber studded door with a tirling pin. The roof is pitched and slate-covered, with a crowstepped gable to the north and coped gable apex stacks.
The interior includes a ground floor north room with a large, currently blocked-up fireplace in the north gable, featuring an exposed sandstone surround and a nook to the left of the fireplace. This room also contains a bed recess in the east wall. The southeast room on the first floor has a large fireplace in the south wall, with a sandstone surround and a substantial stone lintel. The first-floor north room has exposed rubble sandstone walls to the north and east, a large fireplace in the north wall with a slightly chamfered stone surround and a large stone lintel, a blocked window to the right of the fireplace set back at floor level, and a recess in the east wall, possibly another bed recess. The second-floor north room is a small square room with a coved, plastered ceiling featuring moulded ribs, winged heads, and an eight-pronged star within a central circle.
