Description

Northall Cemetery and Lodge, located on Northall Road in Markinch, was opened in 1853. The site features extensive semicircular coped rubble boundary walls, complemented by decorative cast iron gates and gatepiers.

Along the western boundary wall, there are classical gravestones, including a polished ashlar monument to Robert Mitchell of Cadham Farm, which features an urn finial and pilasters adorned with anthemion carving. Another notable memorial is dedicated to Robert Bethune, who died in 1861, consisting of a pilastered tripartite monument with a central stone flanked by colonnettes that have floreate capitals and blind round-headed tablets.

Adjacent to a central mound, there is a monument commemorating William Tullis and Agnes Russell, made of white marble with a palm and cross design set against grey granite wings that extend over 20 feet. At the top of the mound, a collection of Celtic crosses marks the Balfour burial ground, which includes mostly small crosses with simple Celtic decorations, as well as one large red sandstone cross featuring elaborate carving. This larger cross is inscribed "To the glory of God and in memory of Robert F Balfour, year of Balbirnie, Major and Lieut Col Grenadier Guards... died 23rd October 1882, from a wound received at Tel el Kebir, Egypt."
