Description

The cemetery, which opened in 1858 and was extended in 1881, features a variety of classical and gothic gravestones, including obelisks and Celtic cross memorials. Notable monuments include a white marble Celtic cross dedicated to Charlotte Mara Wood, the beloved wife of Sir William F A Elliott, 8th Baronet of Stobs, who died on 29th November 1878. Another significant memorial is a three-stage obelisk for Daniel Robertson Esq of Dalnaglar, who served as the general manager of the National Provincial Bank of England for 30 years. There is also a small monument topped with a carved stone posy of flowers, erected by James and Elizabeth Gowans in memory of their son John, who was born on 19th April and died on 25th April 1858.

The cemetery features large triumphal arches made of ashlar blocks, voussoirs, and keystones. A pair of flat-coped triumphal arches flanks the entrance to the earliest garden, which is bordered by low flat-coped walls and squat pyramidally-coped ashlar piers.

The boundary walls are constructed from rubble, with a gablet-coped ashlar pedestrian entrance and a decorative cast-iron gate located immediately west of the main gate. This area includes large flat-coped rectangular-plan harl and brick gatepiers, along with two-leaf decorative ironwork gates.

At the center of the 1858 garden is a decorative cast-iron fountain, created in 1887 by George Smith & Co, Sun Foundry, Glasgow. The fountain features a circular base set on a large polygonal plinth that is planted with flowers. The design includes a plain first stage that transitions into a reduced columnar second stage, which is adorned with three storks at the base of a flower stem with a trumpet basin. The third stage is a smaller version of the second, without the birds, leading to a further reduced final stage topped with a small stem and another bird.
