Description
East Gilston Mains comprises an early 19th century farmhouse and steading. The farmhouse is a two-storey, three-bay structure, originally harled with painted margins. It features a central door now protected by a modern glazed porch, and retains its original 12-pane sash windows. The roof is slated with straight skews, moulded skew putts, and harled brick stacks. A single-storey, rubble lean-to has been added at the rear.
The steading, also dating to the early 19th century, is constructed of rubble with large, droved ashlar dressings. It is arranged around a courtyard, with four segmentally arched cart arches at the north end, above which a loft is located. The roof is pantiled, and the wings are piended to the south. Two parallel ranges extend to the east, with more modern additions to the east and north. A seven-sided horse mill stands nearby, built of rubble with boarded openings and a pantiled roof. It originally featured a ball finial, which is now absent, and the central post has been removed. Later brick feeding troughs are built into the structure. The farmstead is depicted on the 1855 Ordnance Survey map.
