Description

The property comprises an early 19th-century steading and farmhouse located at East Gilston Mains. The farmhouse is two storeys and has an attic, with three bays and harled walls, accented by painted margins. A central door is accessed via a modern glazed porch. The original windows retain 12 panes of glass, and the roof is slated, with straight skews featuring moulded skew putts and harled brick stacks. A single-storey, rubble, lean-to addition extends from the rear.

The steading, also dating to the early 19th century, is constructed of rubble with large, droved ashlar dressings. It features a courtyard with four segmentally arched cart openings, and a loft on the north side. The roof is pantiled, and the wings are piended to the south. Two parallel ranges extend to the east, with modern additions to the east and north. A seven-sided horse mill stands nearby, built from rubble with boarded openings and a pantiled roof topped with a ball finial, which is not original. The central post of the mill has been removed, and later built-in brick feeding troughs are present. The steading is shown on the 1855 Ordnance Survey map.
