Description
Bessie Bar Hall, dated 1776, is a three-storey, rectangular-plan former malthouse located on Main Street in Culross. The building features yellow harl and block ashlar surrounds around its windows and doors, with the gable facing the street.
On the southeast elevation, there is a forestair on the left with stone steps and a replacement timber handrail. To the right, a door on the first floor has '1776' inscribed in the lintel. The central second-floor hoist door or window is topped by a pointed arch with timber louvres above it for ventilation.
The east elevation has a forestair set back to the far left, with stone surrounds to a small opening at its base. To the left of the main elevation, there is a wide door with a gas lamp above it on the right. There are two ground floor and two first-floor windows to the right, along with another wide door at the far right, which also has a gas lamp above it on the left. The right gable features a chamfered quoin, and a section set back to the far right is built into the bank, with a door to the left. Stone steps on the east lead into the Palace garden and to the rear of Bessie Bar Hall.
The north elevation has a wide central door that leads into the first floor above Bessie Bar Hall. The west elevation is plain, and a garden wall extends from the left gable.
The building has replacement nine-pane timber casement windows with splayed internal cills and wide timber studded doors. There is a two-leaf timber door on the first floor of the south elevation. The roof is pitched and covered with clay pantiles, with a raised roof level on the north section.
Inside, the ground floor has been converted into a tea room, with kitchens and a lavatory to the north. The first floor contains a function room and a gardener's workshop, while the second floor is used for storage. A modern internal staircase leads to the first and second floors from the south. A large fireplace is retained in the ground floor's south gable, with a small blocked recess to the left of the fireplace in the east elevation, possibly for draught. There is also a small blocked window in the west elevation opposite the café entrance door.
