Description

J Tarnawski's House in Sandhaven, Culross, is an 18th-century building that originally consisted of two separate two-storey houses, which have now been combined into one. The southern house has three bays, while the northern house has two bays. The exterior is harled, with exposed stone surrounds around the doors and windows, and features an eaves course on the three-bay house.

The principal elevation faces east. The southern house has a symmetrical design with three windows on both the ground and first floors. The central ground floor window has a lintel inscribed with 'AL.EW 1835'. The northern house has a door on the left side, with a plaque from the National Trust for Scotland above it. To the right of the door is a window, and there are two first-floor windows centered above. All first-floor windows are positioned at the eaves.

On the southern elevation, there is a ground and first-floor window located at the far left of the northern house. The southern house is attached to January House. The western elevation shows that the northern house is connected to Bessie Bar's Cottage, with two bays on the southern house, a door to the right, a window to the left flank, and two first-floor windows.

The northern elevation features two ground floor windows, with a former door to the right and one first-floor window to the right. There is a rounded right quoin at ground floor level.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case style, and the doors are timber boarded. The roofs are pitched and slated, with a corniced stack at the apex of the northern gable of the southern house and a coped stack at the apex of the northern gable. The northern house also has scroll skewputts on its principal elevation. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2001.
