Description

Milne's House in Sandhaven, Culross, is a 17th-century tenement that has undergone later alterations and was refurbished by I G Lindsay and Partners in 1953. The building is three stories tall and has three bays, featuring a rear turnpike stair tower and a later wing added in the mid to late 20th century. The exterior is finished with white harling and has ashlar sandstone surrounds for the windows and doors, as well as an eaves course.

On the south elevation, there is a central wide door with a window to the left and a boarded window to the right. Above the door, there is a plaque from the National Trust for Scotland. The first floor has three windows, and the second floor has three windows centered above them at the eaves. The ground floor is accented with chamfered quoins.

The west elevation features a ground floor window to the left and a small square window on the second floor to the right. The wing on the far left has two first-floor windows and a central second-floor catslide dormer window.

On the north elevation, there is an advanced wing to the right with a first-floor window to the left and a smaller first-floor window in the center. The second floor has three windows, with the central one being smaller. There is a ground floor opening in the left return, along with a rounded stair tower to the left that has small square windows on both the first and second floors. The left return also features a roll-moulded doorway with a replaced lintel.

The east elevation has first and second-floor windows to the right, which have replacement ashlar surrounds. The stones on the far right extend from the north gable to the right.

The glazing is varied, featuring 12 and 8-pane timber sash and case windows, along with timber boarded doors. The roof is pitched with kneelered gables and a crowstepped gable on the rear east gable, covered with clay pantiles. The gable apex stacks are coped, and the rear wing has a pitched roof with a catslide roof over the rear stair tower.

Inside, there is a central corridor leading from the entrance door, with storage rooms on both the right and left. A stone turnpike stair leads to the rear, and there is a timber stock lock on the rear door. Each of the first and second floors contains a flat.
