Description
The sundial located on the east side of the terraced garden at Earlshall is a patched and restored structure that incorporates various earlier fragments from the 17th century. It underwent significant restoration, likely around 1890. The sundial features an octagonal base and capital that are of a different date than the earlier octagonal base, which has scallop detailing and is now cemented to a 19th century shaft. This shaft has deeply undercut angle hollows and attached shafts on a cusped base with a geometrical design. The original dial and gnomon are missing and were replaced in 1983 with an early 18th century copper dial and gnomon.
