Description
Earlshall is a large house built in 1546. Originally constructed for Sir William Bruce, it is an L-plan building of three storeys and an attic. It incorporates a stair turret in the angle and an oval tower to the northeast. The exterior is built of rubble stone, with a vaulted ground floor. The first floor contains a hall, and the second floor features a painted gallery, dated 1617 and 1620. A screen wall to the west, complete with a gateway and the Bruce coat of arms, connects the main house to a smaller, 16th-century L-plan tower. Attached to this tower is a single-storey and attic range from the 17th century, referred to as “Dummy Daws”. The house was restored in 1891 by R.S. Lorimer for R.W.R. Mackenzie. Further features include an east balustrade to the court and a curb to a draw well.
