General Service Aircraft Sheds, Technical Side, Raf Leuchars

The General Service Aircraft Sheds at the Technical Side of RAF Leuchars were designed by Lieutenant-Colonel BHO Armstrong and built by Melville, Dundas & Wilson of Glasgow between 1917 and 1918. These sheds are a rare example of a pair of 100-foot wide by 15-bay aircraft storage buildings, originally part of a group of three. They feature coupled very flat segmental arched corrugated metal roofs. The outer walls are made of long brick, with piers that divide the bays and a clerestorey that has non-traditional replacement windows. There are various low lean-to annexes attached to the structure. The entrance doors are made of later corrugated metal and are flanked by taller brick gantries. One set of entrance doors on building 55 has been re-clad, and all entrance doors on building 57 have also been re-clad. Inside, the space is dominated by closely spaced whitewashed timber Belfast roof trusses with diagonal grid infill, and there is a later concrete floor.
