Sundial, Hallyburton Estate

The sundial at Hallyburton Estate is possibly from the 17th or early 18th century. It is a detached, three-stage stone structure set within a square of decorative ceramic tiles dated '18' '65'. This sundial is located at the center of a sunken terrace, positioned directly between the access steps from the house to the pleasure grounds.

The low plinth supports a Doric column that features a blank shield on the north face. The south, east, and west faces of the column have direct-facing dials with variously sized gnomons and incised markings. The second stage consists of a stone cube with concave hemispherical dials and gnomons on each face. The crowning third stage is topped with a carved thistle finial. The decorative tiles surrounding the sundial also display a variety of initials and patterns.
