2 Aberlady Mains Cottages, Aberlady

The building comprises a row of six single-storey farm cottages, constructed in the later 19th century. They are arranged symmetrically, with two central cottages connected by flanking, more prominent, gabled projections. The cottages are built of squared and snecked stugged sandstone, with ashlar dressings, contrasting at the rear. The central block features a door centrally positioned, flanked by windows on either side. The advanced gabled bays each have a stone mullioned bipartite window at ground level, and a blind round-arched arrow-slit to the gablehead. The outer cottages are recessed, featuring two doorways on each side, flanked by two inner and three outer windows. The rear of the cottages features advanced gables. A single-storey outhouse addition is situated to the west gable, whilst the east gable is blank. The windows are sash and case style, exhibiting an unusually narrow lying-pane glazing pattern, with some windows featuring 18 panes and others 27. Fanlights are present above the doors. The gables have a crowstepped design, finished with grey slates, and paired diamond stacks are located at the centre. Mapwork suggests a construction date later than the adjacent farmhouse. The cottages front onto Aberlady Mains, with only a similar cottage and a cartshed range remaining from the original farm steading.
