3 Aberlady Mains Cottages, Aberlady

These are a symmetrical row of six single-storey farm cottages dating from the later 19th century. Built of squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings, the rear of the cottages feature contrasting stonework. The central block comprises two three-bay cottages, each with a central door and windows on either side. This central section is flanked by broader, advanced gabled bays, each featuring a stone mullioned bipartite window at ground level and a blind round-arched arrow-slit to the gablehead. The outer cottages are recessed, with two doorways on each side, flanked by two inner and three outer windowed bays. Advanced gables are present at the rear. An outhouse addition is situated to the west gable, while the east gable is blank. The windows are sash and case, and feature an unusually narrow lying-pane glazing pattern: 18 panes and 27 panes. Each window has a two-pane fanlight. The cottages have crowstepped gables covered in grey slates, with paired diamond stacks at the centre. Mapwork suggests the cottages were constructed after the main farmhouse. They form an attractive frontage to Aberlady Mains, with a similar cottage and a cartshed range as remnants of the former steading.
