Description
This is a circa 1835 range of buildings forming part of a steading at Aberlady Mains, likely accompanied by a cottage and outbuilding range set at a right angle. The steading’s south range consists of a three-bay, two-storey cartshed and granary, with smaller cartshed wings recessed on either side. The main building is constructed of roughly squared and snecked rubble stone with cream ashlar margins. The cartshed features segmental arches, with three arches at ground level; a double boarded door is centered, and the outer arches are currently blocked with windows. Small windows are located in the outer bays of the granary at the first floor level. The east wing features a single cart arch, while the west wing has a boarded arch, a door, and a window to the outer left. Sash and case windows with small panes are present throughout. The roof is covered in purple slates and features crowstepped gables. A cottage, likely dating from the 18th century and altered around 1835, is attached. It is constructed in sandstone rubble with a boarded door, a strip fanlight above, flanked by windows, and a small window in the end gable. The cottage also has sash and case and casement windows with lying-pane glazing. It is topped with red and black pantiles, crowstepped gables, and raised end stacks. The buildings are contemporary with Aberlady Mains Cottage to the south and Aberlady Mains Farmhouse to the southwest, which are listed separately. A map of Haddingtonshire from 1854 provides additional context.
