5 Aberlady Mains Cottages, Aberlady

This is a row of six single-storey farm cottages built in the later 19th century. The cottages were constructed as a symmetrical group, and were built later than the adjacent farmhouse. They are situated on Aberlady Mains, where only a few other buildings, including a cottage and a cartshed, remain of the original farm steading.

The cottages are built of squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings, though the rear is constructed of contrasting stone. The central two cottages are arranged in three bays each, with a doorway in the centre and windows on either side. These central blocks are flanked by broader, projecting gabled bays. Each of these advanced gables features a stone mullioned bipartite window on the ground floor and a blind round-arched arrow-slit to the gablehead. The outer cottages are recessed, with two doorways on each side, and are flanked by two inner and three outer window bays. Advanced gables are also present at the rear. An outhouse addition is attached to the western gable, while the eastern gable is blank. The windows are sash and case, with an unusually narrow lying-pane glazing pattern; some have 18 panes and others 27. The doorways are topped with 2-pane fanlights. The roofs are finished with grey slates and the gables are crowstepped, with paired diamond stacks at the centre.
