Description
This complex comprises a cartshed and granary dating to circa 1835, along with associated cottages and outbuildings. It forms a south range of a larger steading. The cartshed and granary is a three-bay, two-storey structure with recessed, possibly later, single-storey cartshed wings to the east and west. The building is constructed of roughly squared and snecked rubble with cream ashlar margins, and features chamfered reveals to segmental cart arches. At ground level, there are three cart arches; a double-boarded door is centrally positioned, although the outer arches are currently blocked with windows. The granary has small windows in the outer bays on the first floor. The east wing has a single cart arch, while the west wing has a boarded arch, a door, and a window to the far left. Sash and case windows with a small-pane glazing pattern are present throughout. The roof is covered in purple slates with crowstepped gables.
Adjoining cottages, likely dating to the 18th century and altered circa 1835, are located behind the cartshed and granary. These terminate a range, with the centre and end bays being raised. The cottages are built of sandstone rubble and feature a boarded door with a strip fanlight, flanked by windows, and a small window to the end gable. Sash and case and casement windows have a lying-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in red and black pantiles, with crowstepped gables and raised end stacks.
The entire complex is contemporary with Aberlady Mains Cottage to the south and Aberlady Mains Farmhouse to the southwest, both of which are separately listed. A map of Haddingtonshire from 1854 provides additional historical context.
