6 Aberlady Mains Cottages, Aberlady

This is a row of six single-storey farm cottages built in the later 19th century. They form a symmetrical arrangement. The cottages are constructed from squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings, with a contrasting appearance to the rear. The central block consists of two three-bay cottages, each with a central doorway and windows on either side. These central cottages are flanked by projecting gabled bays, each featuring a stone mullioned bipartite window at ground level and a blind round-arched arrow-slit in the gablehead. The outer cottages are recessed and have two doorways on each side, flanked by two inner and three outer windows. Advanced gables are present at the rear. A single-storey outhouse has been added to the west gable, while the east gable is blank. The windows are sash and case, with an unusually narrow lying-pane glazing pattern, consisting of 18 panes and 27 panes. Each window has a two-pane fanlight above. The cottages have crowstepped gables covered in grey slates, with paired diamond stacks in the centre. Mapwork shows that the cottages were constructed after the farmhouse. They stand prominently on the roadside at Aberlady Mains, with a similar cottage and a cartshed forming the remaining elements of the original farm steading.
