4 Aberlady Mains Cottages, Aberlady

These are a row of six single-storey farm cottages built in the later 19th century. The cottages are arranged symmetrically, with a central block of two cottages, each featuring a central door and windows on either side. Flanking this central block are two projecting gabled bays, each with a mullioned window at ground level and a blind round-arched arrow-slit in the gablehead. The outer cottages are set back slightly, featuring doorways on both sides and a pattern of windows. The rear elevation has projecting gables. A single-storey outhouse was added to the west gable, and the east gable is blank. The windows are sash and case with a distinctive, unusually narrow lying-pane glazing pattern, featuring 18 panes and 27 panes. Each window has a two-pane fanlight above it. The gables are crowstepped, finished with grey slates, and there are paired diamond-shaped stacks in the centre. The cottages were built after the main farmhouse and face onto Aberlady Mains. Only these cottages, another similar cottage, and a cartshed remain of the original farm steading. Historic maps from 1854 and 1892 confirm the location and date of the cottages.
