Description
This is a circa 1835 grouping of buildings forming the south range of a steading, alongside a cottage. The main range comprises a three-bay, two-storey cartshed and granary, with projecting wings thought to be later additions. The stone is roughly squared and snecked rubble with cream ashlar margins, and the cart openings have chamfered reveals to segmental arches. The cartshed has three cart arches at ground level; a boarded door sits centrally, with the outer arches currently blocked and replaced with windows. Small windows are present in the outer bays of the granary’s first floor. The eastern wing features a single cart arch, while the western wing has a boarded arch, a door, and a window to the outer left. The windows are mostly sash and case with a small-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in purple slates, with crowstepped gables. Behind the main range, at a right angle, is a cottage and an outbuilding. The cottage, likely dating back to the 18th century and altered around 1835, has three bays, with the centre and end bays raised. The doorway has a boarded door with a strip fanlight, flanked by windows; a small window is present in the end gable. Sash and case and casement windows feature lying-pane glazing. The roof is covered with red and black pantiles, has crowstepped gables, and raised end stacks. The buildings are contemporary with Aberlady Mains Cottage to the south and Aberlady Mains Farmhouse to the southwest, which are listed separately. An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 shows the steading.
