Description
This is a circa 1835 range of buildings forming part of a larger steading at Aberlady Mains, along with a cottage and outbuilding. The complex is contemporary with Aberlady Mains Cottage and Aberlady Mains Farmhouse, which are listed separately.
The main range consists of a three-bay, two-storey cartshed and granary, with shorter, recessed, single-storey cartshed wings added to either side, possibly at a later date. The building is constructed of roughly squared and snecked rubble with cream ashlar margins, and features chamfered reveals to the segmental cart arches. The ground floor of the central portion has three cart arches; a double boarded door is located in the centre, while the outer arches are currently blocked and contain windows. Small windows are located in the outer bays of the granary on the first floor. The eastern wing has a single cart arch; the western wing features a boarded arch, a door, and a window to the outer left. The windows generally have a small-pane glazing pattern and are sash and case style. The roofs are covered in purple slates with crowstepped gables.
A likely 18th-century cottage, altered around 1835, stands at a right angle to the main range. It is a three-bay structure, with the centre and end bays raised. Built of sandstone rubble, the cottage has a boarded door with a strip fanlight, flanked by windows, and a small window to the end gable. Its windows have a lying-pane glazing pattern and include both sash and case and casement styles. The roof is covered in red and black pantiles, with crowstepped gables and raised end stacks.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 depicts the area.
