Description

This is a terrace of ten single-storey, two-bay estate cottages, built around 1840. They were constructed as part of the Wemyss Estate and are located on the High Street in Aberlady. The cottages are in a Gothic style and were recently restored. A central pend (passage) runs through the middle of the terrace. The end cottages project slightly to the rear, with a higher ridgeline and a dividing skew roof.

The cottages are built of roughly squared and snecked red sandstone, with droved ashlar dressings, cavetto moulded reveals, and an eaves course. They have two bays each, with five Tudor-arched doorways on either side of the central, similarly arched, pend which has been renewed. A pointed window is located between each doorway. The sash and case windows have pointed arches, with a traceried pattern to the upper sashes. The rear of the cottages is harled. The roofs are covered with red pantiles, with ashlar coped skews and ten coped stacks.

The statutory address is 1-10 inclusive, Red Row, Aberlady Main Street. The cottages are shown on the Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854. They are related to numbers 11 and 12 Main Street, and The Wagon Inn, which are listed separately.
