Description
This is an 18th-century market cross situated on the north side of Main Street in Aberlady. The cross consists of a square sandstone shaft, which has been renewed and braced, measuring 6 feet by 10 inches. The shaft is mounted on a base of four stone steps. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (No. 784). References to the cross appear in the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland’s inventory of monuments in East Lothian, in J. Small’s book Scottish Market Crosses, and in C. McWilliam's Building of Scotland: Lothian. Historical maps of Haddingtonshire from 1854 and 1892 also depict the cross.
