Description
This is a circa 1840 row of two single-storey estate cottages, known as 11 and 12 Red Row, located on High Street in Aberlady. The cottages are built of red sandstone rubble with droved sandstone dressings and chamfered reveals. They are executed in a Gothic style and feature seven bays, with four Tudor arched doorways. Each doorway is flanked by a pointed arched sash window containing a traceried glazing pattern in the upper sash. The roof is covered in red pantiles with coped skews, and there are four ashlar coped stacks. Stone steps lead to the doorways.
These cottages were built as part of the Wemyss Estate housing. A doorway on the right side of the central section may have originally served as a pedestrian pend. The cottages are related to the nearby buildings at 1-10 Red Row, Main Street, and The Wagon Inn, Main Street, which are listed separately. An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 shows the location of the cottages.
