Description

The Wagon Inn, located on High Street in Aberlady, is a group of three single-story, two-bay estate cottages with attics, dating to around 1840. Constructed as part of the Wemyss Estate housing, it shares stylistic connections with properties at 11-12 Main Street and 1-10 New Row, Main Street, which are listed separately.

The cottages are built of squared and coursed red sandstone ashlar, with moulded surrounds, a base course, and eaves course. The seven-bay facade features 4-centred doorways, flanking a 4-centred arched pend. Pointed arch windows are set between these openings, alongside a further door and window to the right. Decorative fanlights with a Gothic tracery pattern are above the doors, complemented by decorative ironwork hinge-brackets. The upper sashes of the pointed arch sash and case windows feature a traceried pattern. Four gabled dormers, finished in grey stone, are present, each with small pointed arch windows featuring intersecting glazing.

The rear of the building has seen several alterations and additions. The roof is covered in red pantiles, with grey slate on the dormers, coped skews, and beak skewputts to the dormers. Ashlar coped end stacks are also present. The building is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854.
