Description
This is a terrace of ten single-storey, two-bay estate cottages built around 1840 in the Gothic style. They are located on the High Street in Aberlady and form part of the Wemyss Estate housing. The cottages were recently restored. A central pend (covered passageway) runs through the centre of the terrace, with the end cottages slightly set forward at the rear, featuring a higher ridge line and a skew division.
The cottages are constructed from roughly squared and snecked red sandstone with droved ashlar dressings. The window reveals are cavetto moulded, and there is an eaves course. Each cottage has two bays featuring Tudor arched doorways – five on each side of the central, similarly arched pend, which has been renewed. Between each door is a pointed window. The sash and case windows have pointed arches and traceried patterns to the upper sashes. The rear of the cottages is harled. The roof is covered in red pantiles, with ashlar coped skews and ten coped stacks.
The cottages are closely related to numbers 11 and 12 Main Street and The Wagon Inn, which are listed separately. An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 shows the terrace.
