Stables, The Lodge, High Street, Aberlady

Mid 19th century, with additions in late 19th century and early 20th century. Prominent 2-storey, 3-bay house set back from High Street with tower projecting at centre. Squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings. Base course, entablature and cornice, chamfered arrises. N ELEVATION: entrance at centre in advanced rectangular porch at foot of tower; deeply chamfered surround. Panelled door with 3-pane fanlight above, 2 decorative blind slit openings flanking. Porch mitred to polygonal tower; single window to canted bay at 1st floor with smaller lights flanking, string course above. Tower breaking eaves as turret with narrow single windows to each of 5 faces. Cornice and mannered parapet with blind slits. 2 slightly advanced window bays flanking with timber mullioned tripartites, string course above. Single windows at 1st floor, cornice and coped parapet echoing tower. Later recessed single bay wing to E, added circa 1910; window at 1st floor, with similar parapet. S ELEVATION: 3 widely spaces bays; doorway at ground with modern sun-porch addition. Very narow window to right at ground, window to outer bay; canted bay to outer left with cornice and blocking course. Tall stair window with painted glass above doorway. Narrow window to right, windows to outer right and left. Later wing to E with window at each floor. W ELEVATION: garden conservatory addition to left at ground, blocked window to right. 2 blocked windows at 1st floor. Sash and case windows with various glazing patterns; some 12-pane, some 6-pane.Grey slates, ashlar coped skews and skewputts. Ashlar coped stacks, reduced in height; polygonal stacks survive to wing. INTERIOR: plasterwork cornices and ceiling roses of mid-19th century retained in front ground floor rooms; frieze decoration probably later 19th century, incorporating monogram IHP also found in stained glass of turret door and ironwork of gates. Cast-iron stair bannister, and figurative painted glass stair window in pre-Raphaelite style. STABLES GATEPIERS AND IRON RAILINGS: dating from early 20th century. 2 gateways, each with 4 gatepiers with cornice and ball finials, gates wih monogram, decorative wrought-iron railings and gates. Gabled stable block by roadside to W, entrance within gates and hayloft door at 1st floor. 2 bull's-eye windows to road with elaborate fretted cast-iron grilles. Application to raise rear wall in stone granted 1991.
