Description

Coldstones and Coldstones Cottage, located on Hill Road in Gullane, is a two-storey and attic Arts and Crafts house designed by J M Dick Peddie in 1912. The building is set on sloping ground and features a basement in the eastern bays, along with an adjoining two-storey motorhouse cottage. The exterior is constructed from random rattlebag rubble with droved ashlar dressings.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a gabled and asymmetrical design with irregularly spaced recessed bays at the center. There is a pentice-roofed porch located to the left of center, accessed from the east side. The attic contains a variety of small window sizes, while a stair window on the right of center features an ashlar apron. The outer bays are gabled and project forward, interrupting the recessed bay on the right.

On the north elevation, which faces the garden, there are five bays. The center and the outer right bays have full-height four-light canted windows with parapets that break the eaves. The remaining bays have single windows on both the ground and first floors. There is a projecting terraced area with a coped rubble parapet adjacent to the building, and the outer right bays include a garden house below, taking advantage of the slope.

The west elevation showcases a large four-storey gable with asymmetrical windows and a stack that sweeps in the left gable. There is a single outer right bay. The east elevation features a large gable with irregular openings and a basement door, along with a raised, battered stack on the left and a blank outer bay that connects to the basement of the adjoining cottage.

The cottage itself has a piend roof and gabled bays at the center of both the east and west elevations. The doorway is centrally located on the east elevation, flanked on the left by garage doors and on the right by a pentice-roofed outbuilding. The south and north gables have three and four-light windows under the eaves, respectively, with bipartite windows below. The sash and case windows have an 8 and 12-pane glazing pattern, and there are flat-roofed two and three-light dormers, with swept slated dormers on the south side. The roofs are covered with distinctive large Caithness slates and feature swept eaves.

The property is also marked by a round arched ashlar gateway with a chamfered surround and gablet coping. The gatepiers are made of rubble with dome caps, accompanied by quadrant walls. The boundary walls are constructed from random rubble and are coped with rubble.
