Description

Bankhead House, located at 12 and 12A Laverockbank Road in Edinburgh, is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical house that was extended with a large two-storey and attic wing in 1852 by John Dick Peddie. The original house is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a base course, a dividing band between the ground and first floors, and prominent quoins. The eastern wing is made of grey ashlar, also with a base course, a dividing band, overhanging eaves cornice, and prominent quoins.

On the southeast elevation, the original block has a regular arrangement of windows, with the entrance located in the central bay. The entrance features a deep-set timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, framed by a pilastered doorpiece topped with a dentilled cornice (modern tiles are present on the steps). The ground floor windows have moulded surrounds, and there is a bracketed rainwater head. A small single-storey addition and garage are located to the east. The west wing is slightly advanced and has tripartite windows with stone mullions on both the ground and first floors, along with rectangular panels above the first-floor windows and a swept slate-hung attic dormer.

The west elevation features a two-storey, three-light canted bay at the centre, adorned with a decorative cast-iron balcony above a slate-hung dormer or belvedere. The north (rear) elevation displays an irregular roofline and fenestration, with some later additions. A tall window with stained glass is located in the advanced bay at the centre, and a monogram "DP" is found in the quoin under the eaves cornice on the west side.

The original block has 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, while the west wing features 6-pane lying pane glazing. The rear predominantly has replacement glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are corniced ashlar stacks with circular cans.

The property is enclosed by a tall rubble boundary wall with arched coping, complemented by a footgate and tall corniced gatepiers.
