Description

Gullane is a large modernist house designed by Morris and Steedman in 1964, featuring one and two stories with attics, and a roughly L-shaped plan. The house has two offset, steeply sloping, overhanging mono-pitch roofs and is situated at the edge of a deep former quarry within a large private landscaped garden. There is a sub-level garage at the rear, which accommodates the falling ground. The ground floor is constructed of brickwork, while the upper floors have contrasting white rendered sections and triangular side walls.

The taller roof over the main living area includes partial glazing, creating an integral sunroom that faces west and offers views of the quarry. This section features a box gutter at the eaves that aligns with a wall below, extending beyond the building line to drain into a square rubble-built pond. An open timber loggia extends from the rear glazed porch entrance, leading down to concrete entrance steps and brick retaining walls. The landscaped garden includes various low rubble walls and steps to accommodate level changes. The windows are large fixed and sliding aluminium casements with timber mullions, complemented by timber and glazed entrance doors. There are hidden lintels and concrete cills throughout the building.

To the west of the house, remnants of stone water features can be found on the quarry floor, and the entrance drive crosses the edge of the quarry.

The interior, as observed in 2014, retains its original plan and decorative scheme from 1964, featuring spacious living areas with smaller ancillary spaces at the rear and a compact first-floor area with bedrooms. The double-height main living space includes a horizontal marble fireplace, a fine part-curved narrow strip-boarded timber ceiling, and a glazed partition leading to the fully glazed sunroom with louvered ceiling details. The plaster walls are finished with simple timber skirting, window trims, and dado bands, and there are timber doors, some of which are sliding. The kitchen is a Hygena style, equipped with a triple steel sink and Formica surfaces.
