Description

The Corner House, located on Hill Road in Gullane, was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1912. This two-storey and attic house features a basement on the eastern side due to the sloping ground. The exterior is constructed of random rubble with galetting, and there is slate hanging on the canted bay. The first-floor windows are positioned under the eaves, and the first floor projects slightly at the southern elevation. Originally built as a single house, it has since been divided, with the first floor offset at intervals.

On the southern (entrance) elevation, the house has an L-plan shape with two projecting bays in the re-entrant angle, and the doorway is located on the western return. There is a lean-to conservatory addition on a rubble base, featuring French windows behind it. The right wing has a service door flanked by two windows at ground level. The windows vary in size and style, including single, bi-partite, and tripartite configurations. There are piend-roofed bipartite dormers at intervals.

The northern (garden) elevation has a U-plan layout with irregular and altered openings. There is an off-centre doorway to the left with a stair window above it. The advanced outer ends feature full-height, four-light broad shallow canted bays. Dormers are similar to those on the southern elevation.

The eastern elevation is three-storey and attic, with asymmetrical openings and a double door that is off-centre to the left. There is an unfortunate flat-roofed service court projecting at the outer left. The casement windows have small-pane glazing, although some modern windows have been inserted. The dormers are slate hung, and there are rubble stacks topped with distinctive large Caithness slates.

Additionally, there is a garage built in 1912, constructed of galetted rubble with a rectangular plan. It has a slate piend roof that sweeps down at the western end, with garage doors located at the eastern end. The northeast angle is chamfered and mitred to square by the eaves, while the northern elevation is blank and the southern elevation features three small lights.

The property is enclosed by random rubble boundary walls and a parapet along the driveway, which is situated by rising ground to the south and west.
