1 The Gardens, Aberlady

1 The Gardens in Aberlady is an imposing three-storey house built in the later 18th century, featuring second-floor lofts and situated within a walled garden. The building is constructed of roughly squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, some harl and concrete pointing, raised margins, a cornice, and an eaves course, while the sides and rear are finished in rubble.

On the south elevation, the house has a four-bay layout, which originally included two entrances at the ground level in the central bays, although one has been replaced with a later window. To the left, there is a keystoned door with a relieving arch, a double panelled door, and two corbels above it. The secondary doorway to the right has been blocked in stone. The outer windows at the ground level feature relieving arches, while the first floor has four windows. The second floor contains four smaller louvred loft openings positioned close under the eaves, resembling granary windows.

The north elevation is characterized by a large, shouldered wallhead stack located to the left of the center. There is a gabled single-storey rubble addition to the left that projects outward and has a pantiled roof. An entrance with double doors is situated to the right of the center, flanked by windows, with an additional window to the outer left. The first floor has three windows, while the second floor features two smaller openings, one of which is louvred. The west gable is blank, and there are small openings on the east side at the second floor, including one to the loft floor that has a projecting iron bar and cill, possibly from a hoist. The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the smaller second-floor window on the south side has six panes. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped skews and scrolled skewputts, along with broad, harled end stacks. The interior has not been seen.

Additionally, there is a two-storey carriage house with a piend roof located to the northeast, featuring a corrugated sheet metal roof. This is set within rubble garden walls that extend to the north, enclosing approximately one acre. A bee bole wall to the north is listed separately.
