Arngask, 1 Winton Place, Aberlady

This is a pair of two-story terraced houses built between 1880 and 1885, with an attic and a central carriage passage (pend). Constructed from roughly squared grey sandstone with a contrasting snecked finish, the houses have base and band courses. Stone mullions are used in the bipartite windows. A centrally located segmental arched pend has a studded wooden carriage door, incorporating a smaller pedestrian entrance. Flanking doorways are accessed via panelled doors. Bipartite windows are found in the outer bays at ground and first floor levels. A single window sits above the doorways on the first floor, and a plaque displaying a trefoil motif is positioned in the centre. Three dormers with piend-roofed slate coverings project from the roof. The windows are sash and case, with plate glass and a two-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, with coped ashlar skewbacks and chimneys. Decorative cast-iron gutter brackets are present. At the rear, a brick forestair with iron railings leads to a central door positioned above the pend. The houses are listed for their contribution to Main Street and for retaining their original form, although map evidence suggests there may have been an earlier house on the site.
