Description
Knowes Farm Shop is a mid to later 18th century L-plan single storey cottage group. It features a cat-slide roof on a projecting outbuilding located in the re-entrant angle at the rear. The building is constructed from random red rubble sandstone, with ashlar dressings on the south elevation.
The south elevation originally consisted of two three-bay cottages, each with a door flanked by windows. The outer left window of the left cottage has been altered to serve as a doorway. There is a marginally late piend-roofed cartshed or store that abuts at right angles to the west of the cottages, which has a single window inserted on the south side.
On the west elevation, there are two wide doorways grouped at the centre, with a small window flanking to the outer left. The rear elevations are mostly blank, except for a small window on the east cottage group to the left.
The sash and case windows on the south elevation feature 12-pane glazing. The original cottages have gable wallhead stacks made of sandstone, which have been repaired in brick. The roofs of the cottages are pantiled and have raised skews.
