Description
Knowes Mill is a mid-18th century, two-storey, three-bay mill house that has been extended with lean-to outbuildings by James Hannan and Adam Dickson in 1854. The building is harled with painted ashlar margins.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical and features three bays. It includes a small fanlight above a boarded door, with additional windows located in the outbuilding on the outer left. The east elevation also has three bays, with a former stair window at the center that is partly obscured by a later projecting stair block.
On the north gable, there are lean-to outbuildings and a raised chimney breast at the center of the main gable, which stops at the eaves level. A small attic light is present in the gable head. The south gable is blank but has a small attic light.
The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, along with some smaller windows featuring 4-pane glazing. The building has raised skews and gable wallhead stacks that are harled and original to the south gable, complete with thack stanes. The roof is covered with pantiles, while the lean-to additions have a corrugated asbestos roof.
