The Hermitage, Main Street, Garvald

The Hermitage, comprising Brookside and Juniper Cottages, is a pair of mid-19th century cottages situated on Main Street, Garvald. They are a single storey and symmetrical, with three bays each. The cottages are constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings. The north elevation features a central door to each cottage, with the remains of a line of former gabled porches still visible. Single windows are present in the inner bays, while the outer bays contain timber mullioned bipartites. These mullioned windows were likely enlarged from earlier single windows, though they may be original. Blank end gables complete the north elevation. The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in grey slates, with raised ashlar skews and gable end and mutual gable stacks. The cottages are positioned directly on the street, with the Papana Burn located close behind to the south.
