Ashley Cottage, Main Street, Garvald

Ashley Cottage is a two-storey house dated 1834, which likely incorporates fabric from an earlier period. It consists of a three-bay house adjoined to a slightly smaller two-bay house of the late 18th century, situated to the west. The building is constructed of red sandstone rubble with chamfered arrises around the window and door openings. Three first-floor windows have painted sills with stugged borders.

The north elevation retains a deep-set door to the three-bay section, above which is a dated and initialled marriage lintel, alongside a blank panel. A two-leaf boarded door is set within the opening. Flanking windows are positioned on either side of the door, with smaller windows on the first floor of each bay. The two-bay section has a doorway to the left and windows to the right.

The south elevation features a lean-to outbuilding spanning across the centre of the three-bay house and extending to intercept the two-bay house on the left. The east gable is blank, while the west gable has two windows. The windows throughout are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. Grey slates cover the roof of the three-bay house, while pantiles cover the roof of the two-bay section. A brick stack is located at the west gable end, and a stone stack is positioned to the east of the taller house.

The cottage is situated directly on the banks of the Papana Burn to the south and alongside Main Street to the north.
